GameTime :: PlayStation 4 or Xbox One?

ps4 xbox

It is about to be a year since latest gen consoles were launched by Microsoft and Sony. Both the consoles were launched amid much fanfare but it seems to have fizzled out due to lack of AAA titles. Key titles like Batman: Arkham Knight, Evolve, The Order 1886, The Division etc. have been delayed to 2015.

Having said that there were still few good games like Titanfall, Infamous: Second Son, Call of Duty:Ghosts and Watch Dogs released in last one year. And before the end of the year we will see few more game releases like FarCry 4, Shadow of Mordor and Call of Duty : Advanced Warfare.

Since the launch both consoles have released several updates that has improved overall functionality and user experience.  But the question is: How do these two consoles stand up against each other? Here are my thoughts on both consoles that may help you in your buying decision:-

PS4 Xbox One My Opinion
Dimensions L – 10.8”B – 12”

H – 2”

L – 13.5”B – 10.4”

H – 3.2”

Xbox is really big rather a monster console that might not fit in all TV Cabinets. It has got huge charging brick as well.PS4 is more compact and stylish in design
Weight 2.75kg 3.56kg Numbers say it all
Ports & Connectivitiy
  • Ethernet
  • Wifi 802.11 b/g/n
  • Supports 2.4 GHz only
  • 2 USB Ports
  • PS4 Camera Port
  • Ethernet
  • Wifi 802.11 a/b/g/n
  • Supports dual band – 2.4/5GHz
  • 2 USB Ports + 1 for Kinect only
  • HDMI in / HDMI out
  • IR Blaster Connection
Both consoles have Blu-ray/DVD combo drive. (and supports 3D)Xbox one is pitched as family entertainment device and not just a gaming console; it has ‘HDMI in’ and IR Blaster inputs for cable services.
Hard Drive 500GB, user replaceable internal drives 500GB / 1TB PS4 hard drive can be replaced by users with faster SSDs. Tests have shown that having SSD in PS4 reduces game load time significantly.Xbox is releasing a newer 1TB console in NOV as a bundle with Call of Duty: Advanced warfare. Latest system update though allows for external hard drives. It needs to be 256GB or larger and USB 3.0
Controller PS3 controller was not good compared to Xbox 360 but things changed with PS4 dualshock 4. It’s larger, easier to hold and comes with more precise movement. Xbox 360 controller was best in that generation and same is the case with Xbox one. There are few improvements that take it in the right direction. Both are equally good but in the end it might come down to personal preference. One thing that’s worth mentioning, PS4 controller does not last as long as PS3 controller (probably due to extra power needed by touchpad along with other improvements)
Price
  • $399
  • $60 extra for PS4 Camera
Traditional prices :-

  • $399 w/o Kinect
  • $499 w/Kinect

But these days Xbox one is offering several bundles (with games, Xbox Gold subscription etc.) that are worth considering and saves you some dollars.

If I said that there are no games today for PS4 camera and Kinect, it would not be entirely false. So far there are 2 games that is worth mentioning – Just Dance 2014 and Kinect Rivals. Not a smart buy at this stage.
Exclusive Games
  • Uncharted 4
  • The Last of Us
  • Infamous Second Son
  • Killzone
  • The Order 1886
  • Driveclub
  • Halo 5: Guardians
  • Sunset Overdrive
  • Fable Legends
  • Dead Rising 3
  • Forza franchise
  • Quantum Break
  • Titanfall
Sony during PS4 launch announced support for Indie Games. Several games have launched since then on PS store. We are yet to see same support for indie games from Microsoft for Xbox.
Media Services
  • Apps like Epix, NBA, NHL, Yupp TV, WWE network
  • No MP3 and DLNA support now (will come in future)
  •  Apps like ESPN, Fox Now, FX Now, NFL, Verizon Fios
  • Internet Explorer
  • Skype
  • MP3 and DLNA Support
Both consoles have Netflix, Amazon Instant, Hulu Plus, Crackle, Vudu and Redbox.
Premium Subscription PS Plus subscribers get 1-2 games free every month.Cost – $50 for 12 months Xbox GOLD subscribers also get free games each month.Cost – $60 for 12 months Both console Gamers need to be premium subscribers to play multiplayer. (This wasn’t the case with PS3)In my opinion, it is worth being a premium member as not only you get free games but also good discounts on AAA titles.
What’s more?
  • Playstation Now to play PS3 games on PS4 (bit expensive though)
  • Remote Play via PS Vita and now Sony Z3 phones and tablets
  •  MS is in works to have similar service; nothing as of now.
  • SmartGlass – 2nd screen for Xbox
PS4 is a clear winner here though Playstation Now and Remote play services are crippled with bugs at time and lot depends on your internet connection.
Sales Figure 10 Millions 5-6 Millions*not officially released by MS

Great analysis Manish. Raghav got first day edition of XBox One with Kinect on 5th Sept with 5 game bundle pack.
Include Rivals as a good Kinect game along with Just Dance 2014….

    • Thanks Again. Xbox One is definitely a great console for family entertainment along with movement based gaming. PS4 is more focussed on gamers who are couch-potatoes too.
And yes thanks for reminding me about Kinect Rivals, have added that too.
